Lampas has been woven across the centuries by weavers in diverse cultures; among them the superb 13th-century Italian weavers of Lucca and Venice, the 16th century Safavid weavers of Persia, and the French court weavers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its complex structure requires two warp systems, a ground one and a binding one, and at least two sets of wefts. These structures create a three-dimensional effect in the designs giving the effect of a painting rather than a pattern.
